Wizard of Oz Inspired Styled Shoot

Gone are the days when weddings all look alike, built entirely upon traditions passed down to the point where there is little difference between a woman's wedding photos and her mother's. Weddings are about life, love and commitment; they should represent who a couple is and what they enjoy. That's why we love when couples break the mold and use bright colors, surprising elements and create an experience that leaves their guests going, "That was so John and Sue!"

And while couples getting married these days are starting to realize that they can be creative and expressive when planning their weddings, their parents or friends may not always understand until the big day arrives. That's where styled shoots can help. Showing off gorgeous images of a wedding that is both elegant and fun may help get everyone on board during the planning process, and the shoots can also inspire couples to be different when dreaming about their big day.

This colorful, exciting and detail-oriented Wizard of Oz shoot hit all the marks for what a styled shoot should accomplish - it brought together amazing local vendors, created a magical wedding environment that is achievable to the everyday bride, and elevates the expectation for what weddings can become. Planning, design and florals were done by the amazingly talented Erica from Folie à Deux Events, who was kind enough to allow me to assist her on the day of the shoot. From helping her assemble floral arrangements to moving furniture and setting the dinner table, I was able to see firsthand how a styled shoot is organized, and learned so much from her hands-on process and wedding planning experience.

Erica used the floral elements in the shoot to really infuse the bright colors and feeling of the Wizard of Oz, including yellows for the iconic yellow brick road, blues and whites for Dorothy's dress, reds for the poppy field and the ruby slippers, and of course plenty of greenery for our Emerald City.

Located at the Leslie-Alford Mims House in Holly Springs, NC, the venue was able to include an elegance while paying homage to the Kansas farmhouse, and rental elements were brought in from Greenhouse Picker Sisters. The lovely bride was adorned with a dress from Oak City Bridal and jewelry from Styled by Markie, while the groom attire was from ASOS and Bernard's Formalwear. And for the finishing touches, the stunning cake was provided by Sugar Euphoria and the invitations were designed by Blush & Blue Designs.

And no shoot is complete without amazing and talented photographers to capture the details and hard work. The participating photographers were Wild Onyx Photography, Tierney Riggs Photography, and the lovely Ariel Kaitlin Photography, who was kind enough to let us use her images for this post.

A big thank you to all the vendors who allowed me to participate, learn and laugh with you! I'm also excited to share that this styled shoot has been featured on The Carolina's Magazine, Bustld, Southern Noir Weddings and Black Nuptials.
